Independent Complaints Advocacy Service

Independent Complaints Advocacy Service (ICAS)

What is ICAS?

ICAS can help you to make your complaint to the right people in the right way.  They are a free, independent and confidential service.  An experienced worker, known as an advocate, can help you to make your complaint.  ICAS advocates cannot help you with any matters outside of the NHS complaints procedure.

Advocates can:

  • Help you to write letter to the right people
  • Explain the options you have at every stage of your complaint
  • Answer questions to help you make decisions
  • Talk to you about your complaint
  • Assist with Prisoner complaints regarding prison healthcare
  • Give you the chance to speak to someone who is independent of the NHS
  • Provide a self-help booklet so you can deal with your own complaint
  • Provide an interpreter or translator if you need one

ICAS cannot:

  • Help you to claim compensation
  • Give legal advice
  • Investigate complaints
  • Give medical advice
  • Get NHS or prison staff disciplined
