Popular picnic in the park launches Worcestershire Welcomes Breastfeeding

The Family Picnic in the Park took place at the Worcester Woods Country Park on June 24th, during National Breastfeeding Week (June 21 to 27). The event included fun and activities for mothers, babies and children, including baby massage, sand treasure hunts, story sacks, bounce and rhyme sessions and more. Mums received free gifts and got information, support and advice on breastfeeding. Breastfeeding workshops were provided on the day when requested. The event saw lots of families bring their own picnic and set up camp in the beautiful sunshine, all in support of breastfeeding in Worcestershire.

The event provided a relaxed atmosphere for mothers and babies, with a quiet area for breastfeeding mothers if requested. It not only provided breastfeeding mums with a chance to get together to celebrate the benefits of breastfeeding, but also saw the launch of Worcestershire Welcomes Breastfeeding - a new initiative aimed at encouraging the county's businesses to make their premises welcoming to breastfeeding mums.

Children's centres, leisure centres, hospitals across the county and the Orchard Cafe at Worcester Woods were awarded by Dr Richard Harling (Director of Public Health) with the Worcestershire Welcomes Breastfeeding status. They will now be displaying the logo in the window of their premises so all mums know they are welcome to breastfeed.

June 2010 Life Channel Breastfeeding campaign

"I was delighted to see how popular the breastfeeding event was with parents and parents to be. I'm hoping that the event will have introduced more families to the park knowing that it is a breastfeeding-friendly venue."
