What To Do In An Emergency
What to do in an Emergency
Personal Medical Emergency
For medical emergencies involving you or your family contact
your own GP practice during the day or the Urgent
Primary Care Out of Hours Service (0300 1233211) during
evenings, weekends or public holidays. In potentially
life-threatening situations, go to the Accident
and Emergency department at either Worcestershire Royal
Hospital in Worcester or the Alexandra
Hospital in Redditch, or dial 999 and
tell the operator that there is a medical emergency and a response
vehicle will be sent to your location.
Summer brings warm weather, and sometimes
excessive heat. Look after yourself better in the sun:
Winter brings cold weather and with it
risks of hypothermia and other associated issues. Click below

Major Incidents or Emergencies
"Major Incident" and "Major Emergency" are different terms for
the same thing. Generally, an emergency is an event or situation,
with or without warning which threatens serious damage to human
welfare, the environment or security in the United Kingdom. For the
NHS, that might mean a situation that presents a serious threat to
the health of the community, disruption to our services, or causes
(or is likely to cause) such numbers or types of casualties that we
would need to put in place special arrangements with Hospitals,
Ambulance Trusts or Primary Care providers.
Major incidents or emergencies are rare, however, they can happen
at any time or in any place. You can find
out how to prepare for an emergency by

In the event of an emergency, listen to your local radio stations
and television broadcasts. Please do not dial 999 or other
emergency telephone lines unless you need assistance with an
immediate physical or medical emergency.
Major Incident Planning
The Civil Contingencies Act 2004 places a responsibility on
those organisations at the heart of the emergency response to
assess the risks in their area, make plans and respond to an
emergency situation.
We work with a number of organisations including West Mercia
Police, Hereford and Worcester Fire & Rescue Service, West
Midlands Ambulance Service, Worcestershire Health and Care NHS
Trust, Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, the Health
Protection Agency, local authorities and the Environment
Agency to ensure that we have plans to respond to any emergency, 24
hours per day.
Local NHS Trusts have Major Incident Plans and specific plans in
place to deal with particular types of emergencies, such as
pandemic flu and heatwave. All are reviewed and tested
regularly.
